I really am a grocery store’s dream shopper. The one who, despite having a grocery list, is easily taken in by new food products and promotional pricing and thus ends up adding to her grocery bill.
Not to mention the fact that I LOVE to do the groceries. Seriously. I look forward to it every week, even if our pantry, cupboards, fridge, and freezer are full. I really think I have some kind of Old Mother Hubbard complex.
Anyway, I thought it would be fun if I started a new series featuring new food finds I’ve discovered and like.
Here’s what I’ve discovered this month:
You know I love my breakfast sandwiches in the morning, which include Morningstar Farms veggie breakfast sausage patties. I saw these when I was re-stocking on sausage patties and thought they looked like a fun change.
When I first took one out to heat up, I was thinking there was no way this small thing was going to fill me up. Turned out I was wrong. These dense little babies definitely hit the spot. Be careful when you bite into these, the egg, sausage, and cheese filling can get pretty hot! Add a piece of fruit and you have a decent breakfast. I like that I can heat one up and take it on the go and avoid the temptation of the drive-thru for breakfast. These won’t replace my beloved breakfast sandwiches, but they are certainly a nice addition to the breakfast rotation.
I really struggle with salads. I envy those of you who can down vats of salad daily. Luckily, I’ve figured out a few things that make salads less painful. First, the type of lettuce — I buy fresh green leaf lettuce and tear it into pieces for my salad base. Next, I absolutely must have some kind of protein on my salad, preferably meat and cheese. Finally, I need a dressing to make it all taste good and go down easier. To be honest, I do not like most fat-free dressings — they’re way to sweet and I shudder to think about what they’ve put in them to replace the fat. But I don’t trust myself to use small amounts of the real thing, since I usually need more than a small amount to get my salad the way I like it. 🙂
I was looking for a Caesar-type salad dressing the other day and decided to check out the refrigerated dressings in the produce department. That’s when I saw these new yogurt-based dressings from Bolthouse Farms. The nutritional info looked pretty good (NO HFCS!!) and it was the flavor profile I wanted, so I decided to try it out. It’s tangy from the yogurt, and flavorful from the Parmesan and Asiago cheeses, but best of all, I actually enjoyed my salad! I’m already planning on experimenting with it as a dip for raw veggies or a base for a pasta salad. Good find!
I’d read about this new flavor in a magazine a month or so ago and was determined to find it. I just knew the lemon would complement the natural tang of yogurt. Finally found these at the Publix down the street from us and snatched up a few to try out — plus they were on sale!
The fruit-flavored Chobani yogurts have been hit or miss with me, to be honest. Sometimes the coloring is off or the texture is off. The lemon yogurt had pieces of what I believe is lemon zest, but these were small enough to not be too annoying. There is definitely a lemony taste, so if you don’t like lemon, this may not be for you. I added some Splenda to cut some of the tang, and this almost tasted like lemon cheesecake. Perfect for an afternoon or evening snack. I’m already thinking it’ll be great with some fresh berries and some cereal mixed in for a lemony parfait. Sometimes I add a spoonful of sugar-free fat-free cheesecake flavored pudding mix to my Greek yogurt (a trick I learned long ago on the Weight Watchers message boards) — I can totally see doing that to the lemon yogurt and really making myself a cheesecake-type treat. Yum!
I need something to keep me distracted from all those Girl Scout cookies that are starting to show up. Oh we ordered a few boxes, but I have a feeling Mr. Spice will be taking care of most of those.
Luna bars are one of my favorite bars — they don’t have that fake chemical taste and weird mouth-feel that some protein-heavy bars do. Among my current favorite flavors are Chocolate Raspberry, Lemon Zest, and Chocolate Peppermint Stick. Well, I think I’ve just added one more to that list.
So back to the Girl Scout cookies. One of my favorite kinds are the Samoas — love the combo of the caramel, chocolate, and coconut. I really think that these new Luna bars will quash any cravings for these cookies — and give me some protein to boot. I’ve only seen these at Whole Foods so far, but I’m hoping they start showing up at Publix and Kroger soon.
Now that I’ve divulged some of my new food finds, I don’t want you guys buying them all up and not leaving me any! 🙂
