Tasting My Way Through the Alexia “Reinvent a Classic” Fry Challenge

by spiceaholic on July 10, 2011

I’m not going to lie. I’ve been checking out the competition in the Alexia “Reinvent a Classic” Fry Challenge to see what they’ve been coming up with so far.

It gives me an idea of what’s already out there so I don’t waste my time on something that’s already being done.  I want something unique and delicious and seeing what people are coming up with is forcing me to reconsider certain ideas and approaches.

I’ve also been relieved to find out that I’m not the only one who’s doctoring up various varieties of Alexia fries with seasonings instead of making the fries from scratch.  Although then I could justify getting a crinkle cutter!

My approach so far has been to jot down any and all ideas that pop into my head.  What that’s done is just create that many more choices to narrow down.  Much as I’d love to eat fries all day (and all week), that’s just not feasible so I’m trying to concentrate on flavors that pack a lot of punch but that aren’t hard to put together.

I decided today was a good day to start actually testing out a couple of these ideas.  The plan is to test during this week and then next weekend have a tasting of my favorites.  From there I’ll have to pick only one to submit – such a shame we can’t submit more than one idea!

For today’s testing I decided to focus on regular crinkle cut fries — I wanted a blank canvas for the seasonings and I feel like the crinkle cut “grabs” onto to the seasonings better.

Until I submit my entry on July 20th, I will only be showing pictures of my experiments and not disclosing titles, descriptions, or ingredients. So have fun guessing what I’m testing!

Experiment 1:

Just before they go into the oven!

Straight from the oven!

Time to taste one!  I’ve actually had this combination before and really like it.

Experiment #2:

My strategy for getting the spices onto the fries before putting them into the oven is to spray a foil-lined baking sheet with cooking spray, then sprinkle some of the seasonings on top.  I then lay fries down, use more cooking spray and add the rest of the seasonings.

These smelled so good coming out of the oven!

Mr. Spice nabbing a fry to taste!  He’s being a good sport about the testing and tasting — I told him he’d be sick of fries after next week.

Both tests turned out well.  Like I said, I’ve actually had the first combination before and like it, but I have to admit to liking the 2nd combination a bit more.  I will be testing more flavors this week, so keep an eye out for at least another post!

My favorite way of seasoning fries is to put fries in Ziploc bag, add seasoning and shake. Sometimes I add 1 teaspoon oil per serving just to get my oils in. This always works for me and the fries are coated all around, not just on one side.

I’m curious about #2. I won’t make my guesses here, but you’ll have to tell me what it is. It looks yummy!

I don’t know what spices you’re using, but I do know that I want to eat all of those. Like right now. They look so flavorful and delicious!

could you maybe bake the fries first and then sprinkle the flavors?
