In case you missed my announcement last month, my Bruschetta Waffle Fries are finally in stores! They are a limited edition flavor and in select areas, so you’ll have to check on the Alexia Foods website to see if they’re available in your area. If they are, please please please try them out and let me know what you think! I know in the Atlanta area, they have been spotted in Fresh Market stores.
As for me, I was lucky enough to be sent some to review. But I have a confession to make — I’ve been SCARED to try them! I know, I’m being so silly! I should have popped those babies in the oven and wolfed them down already. Part of it was being nervous about how these would compare the version I created and submitted, I think the rest was knowing that this was it, the end of my journey with the Reinvent a Classic Challenge. I tend to be nostalgic, so you’ll have to excuse me. (Want to relive the past? You can re-read about my fry recipe testing, finding out I was a finalist in the challenge, getting to meet Tyler Florence, the announcement of the 4 finalists, and winning the challenge!)
I finally decided enough was enough and it was time to taste them. Now when the four finalists were announced at FoodBuzz ’11, there were samples available for the attendees. But it’s been so long that I don’t remember how the Bruschetta Waffle Fries tasted then. When I created my version, sun-dried tomatoes were one way that I added extra flavor, but I wasn’t sure if that would make it into the retail version. Let me tell you, when I opened the bag, I’m pretty sure I smelled sundried tomatoes! In fact, lots of other tantalizing aromas were waiting for me — the garlic, basil, and oregano were all there.
I could hardly wait to try them once they were done baking — I think I burned a finger getting them off the baking sheet. I don’t know why I waited so long to try these, these were VERY close to my version, which I think is pretty impressive! These are great on their own, but I already have some ideas for how to pair them up with other items for a meal. That’s a future post!
All in all, I’m very happy with how these turned out! I really do hope you’re able to try them out!
