Such a waste

by spiceaholic on February 25, 2010

Wow, was my last post really on Monday?  I honestly didn’t realize how long it had been.  Sorry about that!

I seem to have hit a lazy streak this week.  I’ve taken pics here and there but haven’t been consistent.   With longer hours and weekends looming on the horizon (March and April tax deadlines),  I will try to post as often as I can.

But my laziness about posting isn’t why I’m posting today.

Wednesdays are trash day for us.  It’s also recycle day, but we’re not good about that at all.  I know, I know.  It’s enough of an effort for us to get the trash out before the truck comes to collect it.

Trash day is when I try to get rid of the pseudo-science experiments growing in our fridge, get rid of stuff I’m sick of eating or should not be eating, and stuff that has expired months or even years ago.

As I dumped boxes and bags into trash bags this morning, I was aghast at how much we waste.  A lot of it is due to my grocery-shopping obsession.  I’m like a kid in a candy store when I do groceries and pretty much always buy extra things because it looks cool and I might use it later.  But then they sit in the pantry and cupboards and I forget about them.  All the fresh veggies I buy at the beginning of the week with the intention of eating them stay hidden in the veggie drawer in the fridge because I’m too lazy to use them.  And why do I insist on buying salad fixings when I don’t even really like eating salad?

I flirted with the idea of a freezer-pantry challenge a few months back and we were actually being better about using up what we had, but eventually seeing the sales in the grocery store flyers and the thought of missing out on a good deal trumped the progress we had made.  But we did end up saving quite a bit on the money we usually spent on groceries.

So I’m wondering if it’s time to buckle down again and focus on using up what we have and keeping the shopping down to a minimum.  This is going to be more painful for me than Mr. Spice but it’s more painful to see all the food that gets thrown out each week.

I do the same thing each trash day and hate when I notice a lot is going in the bin! I’m a steadfast list follower. That’s not my end of the problem. My problem is at home when I actually cook. I think b/c I have so much fun coming up w/ a new dinner ea. night that we never get around to eating the leftovers of the other meals!

I’ve actually gotten my shopping down to a science – I meal plan from my sale flyers and never buy anything other than what is on my list.

That being said, when something is really on sale, I’ll stock up – like when bone in chicken breasts are .99 a pound etc. I have a GIANT deep freeze (seriously, you could fit six bodies in there!) and I have a food storage vacuum sealer which helps with freezer burn.

Forcing yourself to use what you have will make you be creative – you can do it! If you need any ideas with what you have on hand, let me know! 😀
